Memphis Grizzlies add Reno as NBA Development League affiliate
An NBA lockout hasn’t completely precluded the Memphis Grizzlies from making transactions.
Memphis joined the Atlanta Hawks and Sacramento Kings today in using the Reno Bighorns as their NBA Development League affiliate. The Griz were previously associated with the Dakota Wizards, who were purchased by the Golden State Warriors last month.
The Warriors are one of nine NBA team to have a one-to-one affiliate in the NBA D-League, the official minor league of the NBA. The Los Angeles Lakers (Los Angeles D-Fenders), Oklahoma City Thunder (Tulsa 66ers), Cleveland Cavaliers (Canton, OH) and San Antonio Spurs (Austin Toros) also fully own and operate their NBA D-League affiliates. The Houston Rockets (Rio Grande Valley Vipers), New Jersey Nets (Springfield Armor) and New York Knicks (Erie BayHawks) have hybrid partnerships with their affiliates, controlling those teams’ basketball operations, while the NBA Champion Dallas Mavericks are solely affiliated with the Texas Legends.
The D-League was founded in 2001 and features 16 teams with direct affiliations to NBA franchises.
Reno enjoyed its most successful campaign to date last season, its third in the D-League. Former Griz assistant coach Eric Musselman guided Reno to a West Conference-best 34-16 record and conference finals berth.
